The most beautiful chair of the century

In 1926, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed the most beautiful chair of the century, literally off the cuff: the Weissenhof chair. It was presented to the public a year later, in 1927, at the Weissenhof exhibition in Stuttgart. The first designs were created under the impression of the architect Mart Stam's gas tube chair without back legs. Sergius Ruegenberg reported on the creation of the Weissenhof chair in 1985: "Mies came back from Stuttgart in November 1926 and told us about Mart Stam and his chair idea. We had a drawing board on the wall, and Mies drew the Stam chair on it, at right angles, starting from the top. Ugly, so ugly with the sockets. If he had at least rounded it off – it would have been nicer – and he sketched an arc. Only an arc from his hand on the Stam sketch made the chair." There was only one thing missing from the extraordinary shape: the seat and its upholstery. This was the work of Lilly Reich, an interior designer who worked in Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's office from 1926 onwards. It was she and Mies who came up with the idea of ​​equipping the Weissenhof chair with a weave. Together with a master basket maker, Reich developed the new aesthetic that made the expansive chair a complete work of art. The Weissenhof chair by Tecta is still woven by hand today, true to the original, by one of Germany's last master weavers.
